Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Andersen's Tales

Ans christian andersen, the author of the world renowned stories contained in this volume, was born at Odense, a small town in Punen, one of the islands of Denmark. His parents were poor, and could only afford to give him so humble an education that when the lad left school he could not write his own language. Happily, his father was an intelligent man, who spent many of his leisure hours in reading aloud tales and plays to his family, and thus, doubtless, sowed the seed which ripened in the future author.
