Publisher's Synopsis

Surveys of forest condition have been developed in response to concerns that air pollution might be damaging to trees in Europe. In addition to contributing to the European Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe inventories of forest health, the Forestry Commssion has also conducted more detailed surveys of the condition of forests in Great Britain since 1984. The present national database comprises annual records of the condition of beech, oak, Scots pine, Sitka spruce and Norway spruce at more than 400 stands throughout Great Britain. This bulletin reports an investigation of the changes in forest condition that have been reported for the period 1989 to 1992, and reflects joint work between the Forestry Commission and the University of Oxford.
