Herbert Hensen in his biography describes growing up on a farm in 1930s Iowa, advancing through the school system and having the good fortune to enter the state university system and mentors who steered him toward a life career. He also discovered the ROTC, and met his future wife. As the title indicates, it was an Unlikely Journey for a farm boy to retire after having earned his PhD and being named the outstanding teacher in the college of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University twice.
