1894: Sir Montague Fowler, Warden of St Michael's College, Oxford, dies from apparently natural causes. Before long, however, vicious rumours begin to circulate that he was murdered. Concerned, Captain Stanley Fitzmaurice approaches Detective Inspector Antrobus of the City Police - and an autopsy reveals that the dead man was poisoned with mercuric chloride. Who would benefit from the warden's death? His three children are all in desperate need of money...
