Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Dante

More than nineteen years have elapsed since the composition, and more than seventeen since the publication of this book.

It was written at Heiligenblut, beneath the glaciers of the Gross Glockner, during the summer of 1870 - that year which saw the fall of the French and the foundation of the German Empire. I wrote it originally for lectures, and when I sent it to press in 1872, I did not alter its form in any essential particular. As I said in the preface to the first edition, My sole purpose was to make the study of Dante's works more easy to English readers.
