In London, on Saturday, first of September 1666, the yarn begins to unravel at the Star Inn on Fish Street Hill, where an apothecary, a wax chandler, a haberdasher, a cordwainer and a lace maker, exchange postprandial banter. This is a significant evening, for once it is buried in yesterday's vaults the city will not be as it was, as early Sunday morning finds pyrogenic mayhem colonising Pudding Lane. City incineration is nigh. And so it is that these five from its devastation connive to survive, and profit using The Worshipful Company of Toxophillites to cloak their nefarious doings.
