These folds of skin, are to plants, what cuticula, rete mucosum, and cutis vera, are to animals, namely, to defend their internal parts, which are tender, from exposure to inclemency of weather, and to defend them from the attack of enemies; and in order to do this completely, Nature has wisely given thorns as defeu sive weapons to some plants that are most exposed.
