Gesenius in his Grammar (see second English edition, pp. 3, sums up the characteristics of the Semitic languages under two heads, dealing (1) with the grammatical structure, and (2) with the lexicography. We shall proceed to apply his canons to our language, and we shall thus find out how far we are justified in calling Assyrian a Semitic language.
