Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Calculus of Variations

In the third Chapter the author has considered, under the same limitation, the important problem of maxima and minima. Of this problem some examples have been given in immediate connexion with the general methods of solution. But as the most interesting examples of the Calculus of Variations are to be found in its applications to particular sciences, it has been thought most expedient to place them in separate chapters under the head of the science to which they respectively belong. These ex amples will be found in Chapters IV., VIII, and IX., containing respectively the applications of the Calculus of Variations to the Theory of Curves, Theory of Sur faces, and Mechanics.

In Chapters V., VI., and VII, is discussed the case of functions of more than one independent variable, and the extension of the methods of the Calculus of Variations to such quantities.
