Publisher's Synopsis

This is a book about the journey of an artist from his self-taught years through his retirement years. Within that journey he reviews his art during his undergraduate and graduate education as well as, his years as an illustrator and college educator (chairing the department, teaching studio arts, and presenting the challenges of being a professional artist). This review is made through his created works and personal comments. The artist considers his art to be reflections of his perceptions of life. He has avoided a personal artistic style while matching his approach to the subject and content. Working in a variety of media, his approaches range from photographic realism to non-objective. He not only paints the appearance of subjects but explores the psychology and effects the subjects have on the viewer. The artist recognizes that successful art requires not only talent and insight but also what the viewer brings to the experience. He embraces tradition while incorporating contemporary media, equipment, and change into his inventory of art. This is most obvious in his Retirement Years where media synthesis combines traditional media with computer manipulated images.
