Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from An Analysis and Summary of Herodotus: With a Synchronistical Table of Principal Events; Tables of Weights, Measures, Money, and Distances; An Outline of the History and Geography; And the Dates Completed From Gaisford, Baehr, Etc
In carrying out the above design, the author has been also de sirous of rendering the History of Herodotus intelligible to the mere English reader. He has therefore made no pretensions to lofty style or literal translation, but chie?y sought to relate the facts in clear and concise language, retaining as far as possible the peculiar Opinions of the Father Of History. At the same time, by the addi tion of analytical Contents, the insertion of dates, and by clearness of typographical arrangement, he has endeavoured to link to gether the scattered digressions of the history, and render the whole of this intricate narrative as easy of comprehension as a modern history. How far he has been successful it remains for the reader to judge; the difficulties of the task can only be known to the student of Herodotus.
