Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from An Account of the European Settlements in America, Vol. 2 of 6: In Six Parts
So early as the reign of Francis 1. The French attempted an ef'rabli?iment in North America; but it was not until the year 1625, that they made their hri'c fettlement in the weft-indies. This was Upon St. Chrd'topher, one of the Caribee iflands. A remarkable circumfiance attended it; the Englif'n took poifefiion of the ifland the fame day. But this fettlement had no long life on either fide. The Spaniards had reafo'n to dread the ef'ta blifhment of fach powers in their neighbour hood; and they envied the French and En glifh thofe advantages it was forefeen they would draw from countries from which they had themfelves no benefit, and which they claimed only to keep them defarts.
