La palabra amuleto deriva del latin "amuletum" y esta, a su vez, proviene del bajo latin "amoliri," que significaba "apartar o alejar," pues con respecto al objeto se le creia con el poder de alejar o apartar el mal. Los amuletos mas antiguos encontrados son de piedra, bronce, cuero o arcilla, pudiendo tener forma circular, amartillada, rueda, etc. Con el correr del tiempo fueron sumandose otros elementos para la confeccion de los amuletos, y se emplearon abundantemente plantas, animales, y finalmente la escritura. Amuleto es, pues, cualquier objeto al que se le atribuye el poder de apartar los males, los sortilegios, pestes, enfermedades, desastres o contrarrestar los malos deseos proyectados a traves de la mirada de otras personas. Tambien son muy utiles como simbolos o instrumentos de concentracion de nuestra propia energia cuando estamos trabajando con un fin especifico, por ejemplo, el exito de un negocio. Igualmente nos acompanan en nuestro proceso de crecimiento, como apoyos y recordatorios de nuestra esencia o nuestro poder animal, aunque, sin embargo, es necesario tener presente que seria un error otorgarles un poder que unicamente nos pertenece a cada uno de nosotros: el poder de crear nuestra propia realidad. Lo cierto es que desde el principio de los tiempos el ser humano busco protegerse de los ataques de la naturaleza a la que veia, no solamente como la proveedora de alimento para si y su especie, sino tambien como violenta y devastadora de su propio habitat. Para evitar su ira incontrolada empleo estatuas, idolos, totem, dibujos y, especialmente, la quema de hierbas y materias extranas. Despues se dio cuenta que su mayor enemigo era el mismo, en ocasiones su propio companero o amiga, y busco refugio en los dioses para que le protegieran de otros seres humanos. Con ellos llegaron los crucifijos, las medallas y las estatuas representativas de las divinidades, pues estaban seguros que con tan grandiosos seres inmortales nadie se podria atrever. Ilusos.
