Publisher's Synopsis
This book explores some examples of post-colonial relations where Decolonisation did not result in political independence and separate sovereignty. The main examples used are the integrated overseas departments of France, a number of British colonies in the Caribbean and the processes of immigration from former colonies. The cases of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Montserrat and Anguilla in the Caribbean are considered, as well as the French territory of Guyana and the Indian Ocean island of Reunion. Franco-Algerian relations are taken as an example of wider post-colonial relations involving substantial immigration. A comparison is made between British and French approaches to post-colonial relations throughout. Finally, a feminist-humanist perspective is presented on post-colonial liberation.
