It was conversations with other old soldiers that inspired Sawtelle (1838-1931) to write a memoir of his experience during the war; he augmented his account with letters he had written to his family at the time. Among the events he relates are the war's last great campaign in the spring of 1865 and the beginning of Union occupation that led to Reco
