A series of six stories and related activities for children of less than average reading ability, in the first three years of secondary school. The reading age is approximately nine and a half using the Fry readability chart.;Students read the story and then attempt any of the 10 related activities in the Teacher's Resource Book. Each member of the Deckford Five has their own story to tell which focuses on a subject of interest to older children. Each story is written in a different style, reflecting the personality of the narrator. Although the stories interlink and form a chronological sequence, they can be read in any order.;Literal and inferential comprehension, personal response through discussion and guided writing, cloze, diagrams and artwork, information retrieval, problem-solving, simple mathematics and technology, and creative writing are all skills covered in the activity sheets relating to the stories.;The Teacher's Resource Book also offers pupil's and teacher record sheets and a skills matrix so that effective record-keeping can be maintained.
