When Hilda Thorpe arrives at Edwin Jardine's jewellery shop in the bustling heart of 1970s Liverpool, he is happy to offer the attractive widow employment. A widower himself, he understands her need to work to support her daughter Kitty. Edwin and Hilda become romantically involved, but Edwin's daughter Jane suspects Hilda is not all she seems, and with her fiancé Nick she begins to unravel Hilda's past. Meanwhile Kitty is delighted her mother has found someone to take care of her and is gleefully enjoying her new-found freedom, wilfully determined to go her own way - whatever the consequences.
