Publisher's Synopsis

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, course: British Children's Literature, language: English, abstract: The novel Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll has fascinated all age groups since its publication. The success of the story can also be seen through the large amount of adaptations, which have been released in the last few years. This paper's aim is to expose that the unstableness in Alice's own appearance and environment results in an identity crisis. This identity crisis mirrors the situation of middle class girls living in the Victorian era. When the book was published during this period, children struggled with the ideals and the expectations of childhood constructed by society. They were therefore plunged into an identity crisis, like the novel's protagonist.
