The world of the mirror is at the same time the English countryside, a chessboard, and the world upside down, where you have to run very fast to stay put. Alice crosses chess pieces (queen, knight) and characters from Victorian child culture. We find in this novel the mixture of poetry, humour and nonsense that makes Lewis Carroll's charm. It is better to know the basic rules of the game of chess to appreciate all the subtleties of the novel.
