Publisher's Synopsis
Alice Sit By the Fire is a play written by J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan. The story revolves around a wealthy family, the Grey family, who live in a grand house in London. The play begins with the family returning from a trip to India, where they have been living for several years. The patriarch of the family, Colonel Grey, is a stern and rigid man who expects his family to adhere to strict Victorian values. However, upon their return, the family finds that their daughter, Alice, has grown up and become quite independent. She has fallen in love with a young man named Cosmo, who is not of the same social class as the Greys. Alice's parents are horrified by her choice of partner and refuse to allow her to marry him. This sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to a confrontation between Alice and her father.Throughout the play, Barrie explores themes of love, family, and societal expectations. He also delves into the idea of growing up and the struggles that come with it. Alice Sit By the Fire is a charming and witty play that is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.1919. Sir James Matthew, Baronet Barrie a Scottish journalist, playwright, and children's book writer who became world famous with his play and story about Peter Pan, the boy who lived in Never Land, had a war with Captain Hook, and would not grow up. One would like to peep covertly into Amy's diary (octavo, with the word Amy in gold letters wandering across the soft brown leather covers, as if it was a long word and, in Amy's opinion, rather a dear). To take such a liberty, and allow the reader to look over our shoulders, as they often invite you to do in novels (which, however, are much more coquettish things than plays) would be very helpful to us; we should learn at once what sort of girl Amy is, and why today finds her washing her hair. We should also get proof or otherwise, that we are interpreting her aright; for it is our desire not to record our feelings about Amy, but merely Amy's feelings about herself; not to tell what we think happened, but what Amy thought happened.
