Publisher's Synopsis
Navy lieutenant Rub Stillwater settles in the Los Angeles area after the Mexican War in 1848. He wants to enjoy civilian life again, after having fought in all the major battles of the conflict. He marries an Army widow and takes up family life and homesteading. But the dashing rogue, Chance McKinney, an Irishman, who was under Rub's command in the early part of the war, wants to upset those plans. McKinney deserted the American side during the war and fought for the Mexicans, and now he's at it again! With three other desperadoes, McKinney wishes to defraud Rub and other veterans of their land grants, and even put Rub on trial for his life! The climax of the confrontation will take place on a high, snowy mountaintop, with the two men settling the dispute once and for all. Will Rub Stillwater return to his new wife and step daughter, or will Chance McKinney ruin him, and disturb the Los Angeles pueblo with his evil designs?
