Publisher's Synopsis

When her family falls into debt, Agnes Grey decides to prove she is no longer a child and acquires a job as a governess to help support her family. Agnes soon learns that being a governess is not as glamorous as she once thought-she is ridiculed and abused by the families she works for. Agnes' chance at happiness is almost spoiled, until she meets Mr. Weston.

Agnes Grey was Anne Bronte's debut novel. Comments made by Anne's sister, Charlotte Brontë, suggest the novel is largely based on Anne's own experiences as a governess. The novel deals with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation, empathy, and the fair treatment of animals. The original edition published in 1847 was littered with spelling and grammar errors, but was republished in 1850 under the careful editing guidance of Charlotte Brontë.

This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
