The story begins with Tom being punished for his bad behavior for whitewashing the fence. However, he gets his friends to do the job for him, which makes it seem like a desirable job. Later, Tom and Huck witness a murder and fear for their lives when they are discovered by the killer. They vow to keep the incident a secret and not to tell anyone about it.


Tom and Huck decide to become treasure hunters and investigate a haunted house and a nearby cave where they find hidden treasure. However, they are in danger when the treasure is discovered by thieves hiding in the cave.

Tom and Huck become heroes when they testify in court and reveal the killer's identity. Tom also saves Becky when she's lost in a cave and they become closer as a result.


The novel ends with Tom returning to school, where he is praised for his courage and intelligence. He also learns an important lesson about accountability when he takes responsibility for a mistake made by one of his friends.
