More than a third of all adult Canadians take part in some form of adult education activity each year. The papers contained in this volume deal with the history and nature of adult education in Canada, with particular emphasis on the last sixty years. The majority deal with the field as a whole in Canada and the rest with the author's home province, British Columbia. Among the themes which are stressed in these essays and articles are: the impact on the field of its increasing professionalization; the relationship between developments in adult education and the social and cultural evolution of Canadian society as a whole; the leadership provided in the field by the Canadian Association for Adult Education; and finally, the particular contributions of certain key leaders.
