Excerpt from Address of Hon. Thos. Allen, of St. Louis, on the History, Characteristics, Resources, and Present Condition of Missouri: Delivered by Appointment on the Centennial Commission, at the Judge's Hall, July 28th, 1876
Sioux, and other wandering tribes. From one of these tribes, the name Missouri is derived and by some it is supposed to signify mad, and by others muddy, as applied to the characteristics of the river, upon the banks of which the tribe dwelt.
