Publisher's Synopsis

The focus of this work is to explain the "trick" physics devised in order to grasp motion, a concept philosophically considered as a contradiction in itself, in such a way that it could be measured and calculated. With this aim in mind, the dualism of space-time and matter within classical mechanics, the general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, non-linear thermodynamics, and quantum gravity is analyzed, demonstrating its measurement-theoretical significance. This conception is critically compared with the manner in which the dualism finds reflection, on the one hand, in Hegel's natural philosophy and, on the other, in the protophysics of the constructivist school of philosophy. The book as aimed at philosophers, historians of science, and physicists who are interested in the relationship between natural science and philosophy.
