Bookseller Notes

Donald Ogden Stewart was a screenwriter and author, a member of the Alqonquin Round Table. Stewart's letters to Baxter begin following an interview, about which he enthuses 'I hope [...] you got at least a portion of the enjoyment it gave me' and asks to buy the tape once it has served its journalistic purpose. The following two letters show Stewart attempting to assist with setting up a meeting with Ingrid Bergman who like him had retired to London in her latter years but finally admitting failure after repeated telephone calls find Baxter away.Stewart is among those interviewed in McGilligan's book, inscribed to Baxter as 'a book I love to a fellow I love dearly'; Baxter's own earlier interview with Stewart is remembered in his book on Montparnasse, which refers to the humorist's years in Paris and his friendships with Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald both of whom based characters on him (Bill Gorton in 'The Sun Also Rises' and Wylie White in 'The Last Tycoon').
