Set during the desegregation era in Alabama, the story follows the life and hardships of young Josiah Jacobs who is being raised by his single mother, Verna. It is only with her that he feels truly safe. However, most of his time is spent alone while she works hard to provide for her only child. At eleven years old, Josiah embarks on a new journey that takes him far out of his comfort zone. In the midst of trying times, Josiah meets someone who sees something in him that most others have never seen, and his life is changed forever. As Josiah grows, he faces a great deal of responsibility and discovers more about the difficult reality of being a young black man in the South. Will the bonds he has formed be strong enough to help him survive in the cruel world that surrounds him?
