Evelyn the Maj'i continues to live under the curse that has made her half-dragon. Ruled by the dragon spirit of Motkinildora, her army of half-dragons continues its war against humanity in Beledon. Worse, Loric and Avalana have taken ship to Soszwyn, in Regalsturn, leaving it to Warnyck, the Chief Scout of His Majesty's Host, to find Evelyn and undo the wicked magic that the Dragon Talon Staff has wrought upon her.Armed only with a mysterious item of Sir Sturgeon Storm-Hand, a weapon hidden beneath Overlook Castle since that lord of old died, Warnyck makes his way to Lighthouse Island, on the perilous Wayward Sea. In the company of another wayward traveler, a sharp-witted barmaid and a raucous crew, the scout undertakes a frightful sea voyage to seek out guidance from the abandoned lighthouse, far-flung from any landmass. Harassed by the spirit of Motkinildora and her wicked servants, Warnyck must trust that mystical beacon, which directs him toward strange new shores, the great treasure of the gnomes and, of equal importance, a wayward light.
