It is August 1900 and ten-year-old Maddy Moon is relishing the prospect of a long summer in Scarborough. Watching the Pierrot shows on the beach she meets Jessie, who is staying in Scarborough with her family for the school holidays. They become fast friends, and Maddy enjoys having someone to show around her home town, relieved that the family business, 'Isaac Moon and Son, Undertakers', has not put Jessie off.
