- Arthur Conan DOYLE is a British writer and doctor (Scottish), born in 1859 and died in 1930 (at age 71). This author has had success for his crime novels starring detective Sherlock Holmes. He has also written science fiction novels and plays and poetry. He served as a ship's doctor. In 1887, he wrote "A study in red." This is the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. In 1890, the author studied ophthalmology in Vienna, and in 1891 he moved to London as an ophthalmologist. The adventures of his character Sherlock Holmes are read worldwide. Conan Doyle's political commitment and literary work, with over 50 books and a lot of news, earned him a knighthood in 1902, when he became "Sir" Arthur Conan Doyle. Conan Doyle had five children, two from his first wife and three from his second wife. - A STUDY IN SCARLET is a detective novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1888.
