Tommy had only one leg. He was nine years old, and it was four years since a large cart had driven over his leg whilst he was playing in the street. Then it was so badly hurt that it had to be cut off. It seemed to him now that it had happened a long time ago.
He did not miss it very much, except when he came out of school and saw the other boys jump up on a low wall and run along the top till they came to a lamp-post at the corner, and then swing themselves on to it, and slide down to the pavement again. Then he longed to do the same and couldn't.
