Late one evening, Dr. Humphrey Jardine is strolling along Millfield Lane in Hampstead Heath, London, when he is shocked to find a corpse lying in the middle of the road. Jardine hurries off to find a police officer, but by the time he returns, the body is gone. Jardine is sure of what he saw, but the cop doubts his story. Taking it upon himself to investigate, Jardine uncovers some puzzling clues.
