The following pages would not have seen the light but for the fact that there is no precisely similar composition, going over the same ground, in existence. The object aimed at has been to trace the growth of the Hebrew text from its beginning until it reaches the form in which it appears to the reader of a modern printed Hebrew Bible. It has been sought to explain everything which meets the eye on the printed page, or to indicate where such explanation may be readily found.
