I AM indebted for friendly assistance in many directions, especially as regards the collection of the illustrations. I have tried as far as possible to give acknowledgment wherever it was due, but if it should be found that reference to anyone who is responsible for an illustration has inadvertently been omitted, I hope that this mention may be accepted, for it is exceedingly difficult to ascertain in every case the source of a large number of illustrations, the arrangement of which has extended over a considerable period of time.
