The Crusades thus naturally gave rise to the military orders, which united monastic vows and a mode of life partially monastic, with the profession of arms. The state of the newly acquired conquest of the Holy City called for some vigorous exertion. The great leaders had taken possession of their several kingdoms of Antioch, Damascus and Edessa.
