Tms atlas is intended to serve as a companion to the Student's History of England.' My original intention was to select such of the maps in the Public Schools Historical Atlas, ' edited by Mr. Colbeck, as more strictly con cerned English history. It soon, however, appeared that more needed to be done. In the first place many additional maps were required to make the atlas satisfactory, and in the second place many of the maps there published appeared to me to require correction. Most of the maps now given are, how ever, taken from that source, though they have received more or less altera tion. I have especially to thank Mr. James Gairdner for recasting his map of France in 1429 (no. On all matters relating to the Welsh border I have been guided by the advice of Professor Tout.
