Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Revolutionary Maid: A Story of the Middle Period of the War for Independence

IT has been the author's aim in this volume not only to follow the fortunes of a Revolutionary maid through trying scenes, but to outline the history Of the times as closely as might be consistent with a story for girls. Great care has been taken in the study of this period of the war for freedom, and it is hoped that the incidents will carry their weight as matters Of history, and that the importance of the campaign in the Middle States may be emphasized in the minds of those who read the story.

Beyond this, it has been the author's endeavor to give a correct picture Of the manners and customs of that part of the country in which the scene is laid; to bring out the local coloring, and to draw the characters honestly, with a close regard to the effect of education and environment which at an early period began to indicate the variety of types which are now distinctly American.

To her desire to please her girl friends the author adds a modest hope that the book may not be found uninteresting to older readers.
