Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Queen at Bay: The Story of Cristina and Don Carlos

Isabel kept the crown and the people got their constitution. And to her credit be it said, Cristina in after years emphatically protested against any attempt to revoke the liberties she had found it expedient to grant.

She was always more a woman than a queen. Her sound good sense was swept overboard by her passion for a handsome guardsman and there after she thought much more of her duties as wife and mother than of her responsibilities as a ruler. She was anxious to marry her daughters well, and it seemed to her that she was as free to choose their husbands as if they had been the children of a shopkeeper. She was the ordinary, good-natured practical woman, set on the throne by the chances of the hereditary system.
