Michael, Sofie's husband has like so many others been taken away by Hitler's army who has now fully invaded Poland. Did he commit a crime? No he was a Jew. Forced to flee she and her seventeen month old daughter Emma end up on a farm in eastern Germany where they survive in a tiny room for nine years. Thinking they are save they are forced to flee again since Sofie refuses to join the communist party or prostitute herself. They make it to west berlin where they live in a camp for many weeks. Will they ever be save? Watch Emma turn into a beautiful young lady. She marries three times. Once out of revenge, the second time to keep her children, since they are American citizen and she is not. Will she ever find love? Feeling happy for the first time news arrives that her mother, who still lives in Germany, is dying. On her deathbed she makes Emma promise to go back to Poland to see where her life begun. Emma makes the trip. She learns the ugly truth what really happened to her family and her brother. Filled with hatred she goes into a deep depression. Will she come out of it or will her hatred destroy her life.
