Publisher's Synopsis
"Dad farmed on a slope. If I'd lived at Tum Hill for a lifetime I might have developed a slant." Ernest Dewhurst was brought up on a small Pennine farm between the Pendle Witch Country and the more distant Brontë moors. This is an affectionate and self-deprecating look at his life at home on the farm, of family and friends, school and chapel, and the excitement of travelling fairs and Christmas "do"s. On leaving school, Ernest became a local newspaper reporter, against the backdrop of war. His wartime stories include the Home Guard "invading" Burnley and he and his father being mistaken for spies. The book ends as he is called up "to hinder the Royal Navy".
