Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A New Method for Calculating Scattering, With Particular Reference to the Circular Disc

The new integral equation has a particularly simple kernel so that, although it is difficult to solve exactly, it can be solved approximately with ease. It is found that one approximation leads to an expression (in terms of well-tabulated functions) for the scattering coefficient which agrees adequately with the values obtained from the spheroidal function expansion provided that the product of the wave number and radius of the disc is less than 3. The approximation is capable of systematic extension to cover larger values of the product of wave number and radius. The approximation is also used to determine the scattering coefficient when the incident field is derived from a point source on the axis of the disc.
