Publisher's Synopsis
Since the untimely death of her husband, young mother Effie Grey has been forced to live with her tyrannical crippled father-in-law Jacob. She is determined to protect her brother Tom and her baby son Georgie. Seeing little of the pittance they earn by trading along the River Lea, their lives become unbearable when Jacob hires Salter and his wife to run the barge. Tom is sent packing and Effie is driven to desperation stealing Jacob's hidden cache of money. Frantic in her search to find her brother she vows to make a home for Georgie.
