Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Modern Columbus
After a heroic struggle, heartburnings, and the joys and sorrows (measles included) which are child hood's inheritance, I reached the ninth anniversary of my birth; and that was a red-letter day in my existence, for my mother very graciously presented me with a stepfather as a token of esteem and regard. This I did not hesitate to look upon as a ?agrant breach of contract, having hoped to acquire a popgun or a catapult. Even something useful would have been more acceptable.
Under these circumstances, the addition to the family circle created anything but a favourable impression upon the previous arrival, and arguments became more frequent and acrimonious in character, being conducted upon a triangular basis, of which triangle I was certainly not the apex.
