Three worlds intersect, or rather are woven into a seamless tapestry. The world of the court. The world of fairy creatures. The world of the working man. When one enters the forest outside of Athens on a moonlit night in the middle of summer, one will encounter that fairyland. And that's just what a foursome from the court and six members of the working class do. Transformations abound. The most overt and most famous transformation is that of Nick Bottom, the weaver, into a jackass. Marriage and mating is the engine that drives the play. The Duke will marry his wartime rival, the Queen of the Amazons. In the meantime, "the course of love never did run smooth." And will the squabbling fairy royals ever get around to blessing the nuptial beds? The 'mechanicals' entertain the wedding party with a butchered version of the the Romeo and Juliet story. At the conclusion mischievous Puck begs the audience's forgiveness and promises amends.
