IN the year 1632 there came to the then recently founded town of Boston, Mass, a young Lieutenant of the King's army by the name of John Mason. A younger son of a family of respectable position and property in the county of Shropshire or Salop, on the Welsh borders of England, as was the custom of his times he had left his ancestral home to try his chances as a soldier of fortune, and had served with some distinction with Sir Thomas Fairfax, as a volunteer in the English forces which were the allies of the Dutch Republic during some por tion of the Thirty Years' War with Spain.
