Alexander Clay is at sea once more, sent to the Mediterranean aboard the frigate Titan to scout out a new threat. Danger is looming in southern France, where thousands of men and hundreds of ships are gathering, under the command of the Republic's new crack general, Napoleon Bonaparte, but where are they bound, and when will they sail? Clay goes to investigate, and finds himself at the forefront of one of the age of sail's greatest campaigns. Meanwhile, all is not well on board his ship. The arrival of a mysterious stranger coincides with a series of unexplained crimes that baffle Clay's officers and unsettle his crew.
