Diana Foxton is the toast of New York: she is rich, British and beautiful and has a designer wardrobe to die for. Recently married to the head of a publishing empire, she fills her days with lunches, interior decorating and clothes shopping. Her priorities are looking good, appearing in society pages and hosting the most talked about parties in Manhattan but, above all, making an art of being the perfect wife and hostess.
But when she discovers that her husband is having an affair, her glamorous bubble is burst and she finds herself without any money or any qualifications, shunned by the glittering society that once embraced her.
On her own for the first time, she takes the only job she can get, exchanges the Manolo kitten heels for comfortable shoes and settles, awkwardly, into a life of doing her own cleaning and taking public transport.
