Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A History of Fowling: Being an Account of the Many Curious Devices by Which Wild Birds Are or Have Been Captured in Different Parts of the World

I could open my shutter, made fast With a bough and a stone, And look thro' the twisted dead vine-twigs, Sole lattice that's known. Quick and sharp rang the rings down the net-poles, While, busy beneath, Your priest and his brother tugged at them, The rain in their teeth.

The systematic arrangement of birds made use of, as far as possible, in this work is partly based upon that which my colleagues and I adopted in writing the avian portion of the Royal Natural History. Had the present work been intended only for scientific readers, I should have made several changes in the nomenclature as it stands, but in the interest of the general reader I have employed the best known genera.
