The effectiveness of any arms control or disarmament treaty depends on the effectiveness of its verification provisions. Verification is thus a crucial but also a controversial issue.;This text examines how, in practice, the effective verification of various urgently needed arms control treaties - including a comprehensive test ban treaty, conventional forces reductions, a fissile material cut-off and a freeze on the development and production of nuclear weapons - can be achieved.;The text is the result of a project undertaken by the London Centre for International Peacebuilding and was originally intended to be a working manual for practical use both by those negotiating arms control agreements and those who would be required to implement the procedures.
